CAP6412 — Advanced Computer Vision

An advanced graduate seminar that puts students at the cutting edge of computer vision, multimodal learning, and embodied intelligence — transformers for vision, contrastive and foundation models, large vision-language models, diffusion-based generative models, and world models that combine perception with decision-making. Half the course builds foundations; the other half is a critical, paper-driven deep dive into frontier research, culminating in a team research project.


CAP5415 — Computer Vision

A graduate-level introduction to computer vision, blending classical and deep learning approaches. Covers imaging geometry, camera models, image filtering, edge and feature detection, image classification, object detection, scene understanding, action recognition, and optical flow — building the foundation for advanced vision research. Includes weekly homework, programming assignments, and a course project. Enrollment has grown from ~30 to ~150 students over the past several years.


CAP4453 — Robot Vision

The study of machine vision is one of the few areas of science that blends intuition with formal methods — vision, whether in humans or machines, is fundamentally a computational process. This undergraduate course examines the elementary concepts that let machines deliver the kinds of visual capabilities humans take for granted: scene recognition, motion processing, and navigation. Students work through edge detection, methods for recovering shape from images, object detection, and motion analysis, building up from the basics of linear algebra and image filtering to feature extraction, optical flow, and image segmentation and classification, before applying deep learning to these classical computer vision problems. Along the way, students are also exposed to open problems in these areas whose solutions carry high technological payoff. The workload blends interesting reading, hands-on programming, and tests, and the course is suitable for undergraduates in Computer Science and Engineering, or anyone looking for an introduction to machine vision.
